This use case allows a charity to instantly check the status of a Blue Card holder.
A Blue Card is a common term in Australia for a “Working with Children Check”. Many organisations are required to ensure that people that work with children are vetted as being fit to do so. This usually involves a police check for prior convictions. Some sample organisations that need to use Blue Cards:
- Charities that work with children
- Sporting clubs, for coaches, referees and more
- Schools that have volunteers not being supervised
- Child care centres
Decentralized Identity and Verifiable Credentials are a natural fit for use of Blue Cards. Compliance requires a level of regular checking, training and record keeping that can be difficult for mostly volunteer organisations. By the relevant issuing authority using Verifiable Credentials, a simple QR code can be used for volunteers to scan. If the issuing authority has need to revoke a Blue Card, this can be done using Decentralized Identity standards; thereby reducing the risk to children, and the costs of compliance to volunteer organisations.
