With data breaches now a constant concern for businesses of all sizes, it’s clear that that employing the right controls and skills to prevent them is now far more cost-effective than the enormous cost of cleaning up.
For example, the data breach experienced by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand earlier this year was estimated to be around NZ$3.5million, not including the cost of improving processes as a result of the breach. The Reserve Bank estimates that the cost of cyberattacks to New Zealand’s banking and insurance industry alone is between NZ$80 and NZ$134 million each year.
