The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) is a Commonwealth government agency responsible for developing and implementing national policies, programs and regulations that respond to climate change, manage energy systems, safeguard Australia’s natural environment, and sustain water resources. It plays a key role in protecting the nation’s biodiversity and heritage, overseeing emissions reduction and energy transition, ensuring a secure and affordable supply of energy, conserving water for varied uses (environmental, industrial and community), and preserving unique ecosystems and heritage sites.
DCCEEW operates on the basis of science, innovation and stakeholder engagement. It enforces environmental and climate‐related legislation (including laws about fuel quality, pollutants, wildlife imports/exports, greenhouse gas emissions, and hazardous substances), delivers programs and grants, collects and publishes data and research, and works in partnership with communities, First Nations peoples, businesses, and other government bodies. The department is committed to transparency, accountability and a sustainable future, balancing environmental protection with economic and social needs.
